About Us

Who is Mission Australia?

Mission Australia is one of the largest community service organisations in the country. We are dedicated to supporting Australians in need as they move towards independence.

With more than 155 years of practical experience in tackling the issues that lead to disadvantage and homelessness, Mission Australia builds opportunity for those that need it most. In 2015 alone, we reached 307,320 people across 589 programs and services.

By raising funds through your Winter Sleepout, you will be supporting vital homelessness services that reach out to people in need, many of them families with young children.

Winter Sleepout

Like any event, the Mission Australia Winter Sleepout has grown from humble beginnings to become the flexible fundraising event that it is today.

Along the way, we’ve ventured out and seen a bit of the world. In 1988, we started with our first Winter Sleepout in Martin Place, moving to the Opera House steps in 1999. We've slept out in Goulburn, in Brisbane and even in Taronga Zoo. But now Winter Sleepout is coming home because homelessness is in our backyard.

In 2016, Mission Australia Winter Sleepout is all about staying local. It's about getting a blanket, heading outside to the backyard and sleeping out for a good cause.

Mission Australia operates many different services to relieve and prevent homelessness

Missionbeat is a unique outreach service that patrols the streets of Sydney’s inner city, reaching out to people in distress. It transports people who are homeless, in need of medical attention or affected by drugs and alcohol to services where their immediate needs can be met. This includes safe accommodation, food, clothing, hot showers and other intervention support services.

Youth Accommodation Support Services provides safe and secure crisis accommodation to vulnerable young people aged 15 to 18 years, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It offers shelter, support and assistance with schooling, homework and vocational studies. Given that family breakdown is the most significant factor in youth homelessness, it also offers family relationship mediation.

Fairfax House offers a safe and secure environment for families in crisis. It has 15 town houses across two sites, with outside play areas for children and facilities for group work and case management services. Families receive assistance in finding long-term accommodation and addressing other needs such as basic living and language skills, money management, mental illness, parenting skills, education and employment.
